This dissertation is to provide a full analysis on and a answer to the following essential questions: why do some of adjectives only serve as adverbial in the sentences? Why do some of adjectives only serve as complement? Why do some adjectives serve as both? Why do some serve as neither adverbial nor complement? This analysis is conducted under the theories of cognitive grammar and semantics, the method adopted in this dissertation is structuralists'distribution and variation.Cognitive linguistics hold that grammatical structure is conventionally semantic structure or conceptual structure. Therefore, I draw a further conlusion that whether the one-syllable- adjectives can be put in the place of adverbial or complement is mainly decided by their requirements for semantic meaning. In the process of solution to these essential questions, I explored in turn the following four questions:First, what characteristics do the words that can be admitted to the place of adverbial need to have?Second, what characteristics do the words that can be admitted to the place of complement need to have?Third, among these chosen one-syllable-adjectives, which words have these semantic characteristics that require for the place of adverbial or complement?Four, why do those words that don't have the characteristics required for the place of adverbial or complement come into the place, and cons versa? This dissertation has made important breakthrough in three aspects. This dissertation find out the main semantic and syntax characteristics of the place of adverbial and complement.Further, on the basis of cognitively semantic meaning of these words, I hold they fall into four categories.Last, I also explicate the fact that why only those words that do not have these characteristics required for the place of adverbial and complement come into the place rather than other words, and cons versa.
