In this dissertation, based on the large Modern Chinese Corpus and the Chinese interlanguage corpus,we investigated the grammatical functions of modern Chinese Disyllabic Adjectives when they are composed with verbs. When adjectives proceed verbs in the lineal sequence, used as Adverbial of Manner;and they are used as Complement of State when adjectives after verbs. We described and explained this grammatical phenomenon systematically by employing the methods of semantic analysis, errors analysis and languages comparison from the perspective of linguistic typology.Chapter one is an introduction.First of all we summarized the academic history and current academic trends concerning with the functions of Chinese Adjectives used as Adverbial of Manner and Complement of State. On this basis the strategy and structure and significance of this research are illustrated briefly. In Chapter Two and Chapter Three we separately investigated the semantic characteristic, syntactic restriction and pragmatic function of Chinese Disyllabic Adjectives used as Adverbial of Manner and Complement of State. The syntactic position of Chinese adjectives is affected by multiple factor including the semantic characteristic of adjectives and verbs, the potential semantic association between adjectives and verbs, and the grammatical meaning of the syntactic position of Adverbial of Manner and Complement of State in a modern Chinese sentence.Chapter Four focused on the word order of adjectives and verbs in Chinese. The Disyllabic Adjectives are divided into four categories according to its semantic orientation in modern Chinese sentence:pointing to predicate verb,to agent of action,to object of the action or evaluation of the event of the sentence. In these four situations the syntactic and semantic restrain are discussed. In this chapter we also investigated the difference of the meaning and pragmatic function when adjectives proceeding verbs or after the verbs.Chapter Five is about the errors made by foreigners when they learned Chinese Adverbial of Manner and Complement of State. We focused on the errors which caused by the word order between adjectives and verbs. On the basis of classification of the errors,we analyzed the causes of errors from the perspectives of negative transfer of native language,Chinese grammatical rule generalization and learning strategy.A variety of materials as Chinese textbooks are investigated in this chapter, and we pointed out the deficiency of the explanation about the function of adjectives as Adverbial and Complement, and put forward the suggestion to improve it.Chapter Six is a comparative study. We compared the Chinese Adverbial of Manner and Complement of State with the prepositional adverbial and postpositive adverbial in English and in Spanish. We believe the nature of Chinese Complement of State is different from the postpositive adverbial in English and in Spanish.Complement of State in Chinese grammar is a focalized expression of manner, but from a typological perspective,it should be taken as an independent mighty category of Chinese syntax, which, functionally, has far surpassed that of Adverbial of Manner, with its high degree of grammaticalization,it is a independent syntactic constituent.Chapter Seven is a conclusion of this dissertation. The main research work of the investigation is summarized, and the main conclusion of this study is outlined in this chapter. We pointed out the innovation of this study.Aiming at the deficiency of the present dissertation,we put forward some questions worthy of further study. Some research field expandable of this study is mentioned.
