This thesis focus on the emerging American higher dance education and the "Mother of American Higher Dance Education", Margaret H'Doubler, just for exploring and exposing " two essences and one relationship" as the research target, which includes the essence of the beginning of dance in American higher education, the nature of Margaret H'Doubler's dance teaching, and the relationship between the emerging American dance education and Margaret H'Doubler.Through the deep research on the multi-circumstance of the objects, the author caught the very nature of the early higher dance education in America and the innovative educational practice of H'Doubler, and summarized it into the original conclusion of this thesis as follow:The American higher dance education, which grows up in the smooth positions mixed with stresses, was nurtured by two kinds of educational philosophies and three kinds of curriculum ideas. The essence concealed in its emerging contains three meanings: 1. the beginning of dance in American higher education is a process; 2. its educational nature was decided by the social movements and modern educational system; 3. it is the integration of rational and progressive educational theories. Margaret H'Doubler's dance educational theory and practice system, which based on her original dance idea, played very important role in the infancy of American dance higher education because of the triple essence: 1. It was developed from "broad dance concept" and "experience theory" and services eventually for human education; 2. It's the revolution of dance teaching with three trumps; 3. It's advanced dance education with four kinds of aggregations.Concerning "the emerging American higher dance education" and "Doubler's theory and practice of dance education, people often neglect the fact of they mingled but independent from each other. The exact relationship between "the emerging American higher dance education" and "Doubler" is—the "emergence" was not the outcome of Doubler's personal efforts, and the influence of Doubler's theory and practice of dance education was not limited to the emerging American higher dance education either. As the research on history is for helping people to manage reality well, this historical thesis pointed out three urgencies in dance education nowadays based on "two essences and one relationship": firstly, the educational object and aim should be defined; secondly, the basic theory and applied theory should be discerned; the teaching way in different period should be differentiated. The key of understanding the three urgencies is three words--"who", "how", "why"--Dance teacher should make it clear that "who" they are teaching, "how" they will teach, and "why" they teach as that?Dance education can service for the whole society because of the unique art nature of dance. But it's difficult for dance educators to fulfill the function of dance education to various groups of people wholly. The task will be more arduous and the way will be longer to dance educators in China where dance education growing very promptly. Standing in the line of Chinese dance educator, the author chose the beginning of dance in American higher dance education as the research target is making steps into studying the basement and way to build the palace of dance education firmly and pragmatically.
