Education professionals and the general public realize that teachers' quality is the key to improve our nation's education level. The core of a teacher's quality is his /her knowledge and skills."Teachers' knowledge and skills" are the prerequisite of a teaching career. This paper is a study of teachers' knowledge and skills with a developmental perspective. The focus of this study is on "What", "Why", and "How" with regards to teachers' development in knowledge and skills.? "What" covers a historical perspective of teachers' knowledge and skills with reference to concepts and contents.? "Why" covers the evolution and modem theoretical foundation of teachers' knowledge and skills.? "How" covers how teachers uses their knowledge and skills and the results in real life.Developmental Study is an attempt to describe teachers' continuing improvement of their knowledge and skills over time. It also details and analyzes teachers' individual and professional development in knowledge and skills with an emphasis on their changing contents and their underlining motivation, sources and phenomenon.This thesis is an investigation in "teacher's development in knowledge and skills" in the following areas:1. Concepts, basic meaning and current research scope of a teacher's "knowledge" and "skills";2. The evolution of domestic and overseas studies of the teacher's development in knowledge and skills, their background and results, and implications in an internet-based knowledge economy;3. How teachers acquire knowledge and skills, the differences between domestic and overseas teachers' curriculum and different focuses in the development in knowledge and skills demonstrated from domestic and overseas teachers;4. What are the foundation theories of the teacher's knowledge and skills, the study areas of sufficient teacher'knowledge and skills, and what is the meaning and how to develop teacher's tacit knowledge.5.Differences between a teacher's pre-career and in-career development in knowledge and skills, sources and kernels in the development, major factors in the development of knowledge and skills development among teachers as a professional group;6. The professionalism of teachers and its implication, the different requirements of knowledge and skills among teachers in various disciplines, classroom utilization of a teacher's knowledge and skills, and case study feasibility;7. The evaluation path and criteria of teachers' development in knowledge and skills, and how to improve the effectiveness of such evaluations. This paper and its framework are based on domestic and international literature, a survey of teachers and principals, and case studies. The study is an attempt to answer the questions in the seven areas listed above. Based on an international common ground of teachers' knowledge and skills and domestic teachers' actual condition and situation, this study attempts to provide solutions, suggestions, and methods to develop teachers' knowledge and skills suitable to domestic teachers.This paper includes the nine parts as below:Introduction Covers the sources and relevance of the thesis, the methodology, original ideas and limitations of the study.Chapter One Provides a description of a teacher's professional knowledge and skills and core concepts and a survey of domestic and international studies in this subject, its development, coverage, condition, history and future.Chapter Two Presents a background study of the development in teacher's knowledge and skills. With a historical perspective of human knowledge development the chapter investigates the relationship between the development of teachers' knowledge and skills and the influence of education philosophy and curriculum.Chapter Three Demonstrate and analyze the recent development of teacher education in their knowledge and skills. A contract study betweens some Western countries and some Asia countries and areas.Chapter Four This chapter will explore the/ recent development of teacher's knowledge and skills theories, including the research of teacher's tacit knowledge. There are at least 5 aspects of teacher's knowledge and skills theories. The study will show the important change of these theories in recent decades, how they influence teachers and how the tacit knowledge works in the classroom.Chapter Five In this chapter, the sources for and development in a teacher's knowledge and skills nowadays will be presented through an analysis of a survey from 307 teachers and 10 principals with regards to the development in a teacher's knowledge and skills development. It depends on the creation of new curriculum, which impacts the development in domestic teachers' knowledge and skills very deeply.Chapter Six Investigates the classroom usage of a teacher's knowledge and skills, taking the Chinese Language & Literature as a case study, which analyzes the development of "subject teaching" as professional knowledge and skills, discusses the special field of a teacher's knowledge and skills and presents a single case study of two top Chinese teacher's development in knowledge and skills.Chapter Seven Offers a historical review of the evaluation of teachers' development in professional knowledge and skills. It presents a few selective cases from developed countries and our country to show the different criteria in teacher evaluation. It describes the result, feasibility and implication of evaluating teachers' knowledge and skills. Conclusion Provides a "tree" picture of the study regarding teachers' development in knowledge and skills. Base on the result of the study, the paper provides suggestions to stimulate and improve domestic teachers' development in knowledge and skills. It suggests an enhanced prerequisite of the professional requirement for pre-career teachers, an improved teacher selection process and a development plan for on the job teachers suitable for both the development of individual teachers and schools.
