With the advancement of science and technology, lots of machinery nowadays has characteristics of large scale (or miniaturization), high speed (or high efficiency) and precision. The Demand for high-standard surface quality (characteristics of surface geometry and physical and mechanical properties of surface) of the parts is increased correspondingly. However, traditional surface finishing technology cannot process workpieces with complicated shapes, such as rotators, efficiently or precisely. Therefore, developing new finishing technology is the focus and difficulty in surface finishing field. The fluid magnetic abrasive finishing technology based on magneto rheological effect is a precision freedom abrasive, which has advantages of good controllability, simple process and low cost. It suits for finishing both inner and outer surfaces of magnetic or non-magnetic rotator workpieces.Main content of the paper is as following: 1. In view of magneto rheological effect of FMA, the microscopic and macroscopic mechanical models were proposed.2. The material removal mechanism was studied, and then the material removal model based on Preston formula was funded.3. The stability evaluation method of FMA was proposed, and the polymerization stability and sedimentation stability were improved with modification.4. A Series of experiments were conducted to verify the effect of modification.5. The electromagnetic, permanent compound FMA device was developed, and the rationality was verified by computer Simulation.6. New process was proposed. The choice of components, mechanism of magneto rheological effect, improvement of the stability, preparation process, material removal mechanism and development of new apparatus have been systematically studied in this paper. Compared with the traditional FMA, the modified version has various advantages including long working life, high stability and high processing efficiency. The electromagnetic permanent compound FMA device has the ability to process inner and outer surfaces of rotator workpieces at the same time. Thus, the development of FMA finishing technology was greatly promoted, and the mercerization of it was highly accelerated.
