Brazed diamond tools hold numerous advantages, such as high grit bonding strength, easy defined grain distribution, high protrusion of abrasives and long performance life, and show a bright and promising future in high efficiency grinding of difficult to cut materials. However, at present, only monolayer brazed diamond tools with various defined grain distribution have been researched and developed. Once the monolayer diamond abrasives wear out, the tools failure. This really stunts the improvement of tool life and development of brazed tools. Therefore, this kind of brazed tool is worth to be further researched.Depending on the available high temperature vacuum brazing technology, selectively grain distribution and self-lubricating effect, the multilayer brazed diamond tools with linear grain distribution have been developed and studied in this paper.The main creative contents in this paper are as follows:(1) The structure of multilayer brazed diamond with defined grain distribution was designed. This unique structure could still guarantee the high bonding strength of diamond abrasives, but also offer the great possibility to optimize the diamond distribution according to the certain products and machining conditions. On one hand, the chip thickness could be controllable during machining; on the other hand, the multilayer abrasive brazing technology could be achieved.(2) The adaptability of diamond abrasives with existing high temperature brazing process was analyzed. According to the characteristics and brazing difficulties of fine grain diamond, a method combining with two-step brazing process and composite filler reinforced by Ti C particles was put forward for brazing fine grain diamond.(3) Combined with the designed structure of multilayer brazed diamond with defined grain distribution, the design principle of self-lubricating filler was raised and following the component of self-lubricating filler was designed.(4) Integrated multilayer brazing technology of diamond with defined grain distribution and self-lubricating technology, self-lubricating multilayer brazed diamond saw blades and grinding wheels were fabricated successfully. High-efficiency sawing of granites and precision machining of silicon carbide ceramics were conducted and studied with the self-lubricating multilayer brazed diamond saw blade and grinding wheel, respectively. Results confirm that the self-lubricating multilayer brazed diamond tools have some outstanding advantages in machining hard-brittle materials, such as low diamond concentration, better tool sharpness and long tool life.
