Study Of The Issue Of Environmental Protection For The Big Sport Events And The Practice Of Beijing Olympic Games

With the social and economic development,the big sport event must produce some environmental problems which have challenged the sustainable development of sport.How to protect and improve the environment when organizing the big sport event becomes a very important issue.The scientific practice of environmental protection of 29th Olympic games in Beijing was studies and analyzed.Also the environmental issues of some of other big sport events were also studied for the purpose of getting the mode of how to organize a environmental friendly event. Review,questionnaire,logistic analysis and case study were adopted in the study. The conclusions were as follows:1.The large scale sport events were surely to have some negative impacts on the environment.But if the environmental protection idea was adopted,measures taken well,the environment would be improved.2.The increasingly larger scale events have brought high intensive environmental pressure for the holding city because of the waste of venues after matches, excessive garbage,excessive resource consuming,air pollution and noise etc.3.The IOC awareness of environmental protection can be divided into three stages: stage of savagery,stage of enlightenment,stage of strengthening.4.IOC take the environment protection as the third pillar after sport and culture. The current environmental situation and the prospect was one of the most important reasons for the failure of bidding for 2000 Olympic Games and the successful bidding of 2008 Olympic Games.5.The meaning of green Olympics is to implement the sustainable idea of environmental protection,resource reservation and the protection of the ecological balance when organizing Olympic Games.By organizing green Olympics more environmental protection infrastructure would be built,the ecological environment improved,the education program developed,people’s consciousness of environmental protection raised and the environmental legacy left. 6.Beijing Olympic organizing committee has successfully realized the green Olympics,the city environment was greatly improved.But the flaws were that the instructive documents for the environmental protection was unbinding and the restart of some short term measures for Beijing games will continue affect the city environment after the end of Beijing games.7.The Beijing citizens appraised the measures taken for the environmental improvement during Olympics especially for the work of control the air pollution. The consciousness of environment protection for the Beijing citizens was also strengthened.8.The work of environmental protection for the big events should learn from the policies and successful practices of the IOC.The essential elements for holding a green event were:making environmental protection plan,monitoring its whole practice;making reasonable plan for the construction of the venues and making them used often after games;the environmental protection techniques should be fully used in the venues;strengthening the control of environmental protection of the holding city and improving its environmental quality;popularizing the consciousness of environmental protection and more environmental protection education programs should be implemented.
