Natural products have come into existence over a long period of natural selection and evolution. They have more complex structures and remarkably diverse biological activities. There are both fundamental sources of new chemical diversity and integral components of today’s pharmaceutical compendium. In order to find anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agents with novel structure and low toxicity and to develop new and economical herbal-based products for treating various diseases, we studied the Plumeria rubra, Dysoxylum gotadhora, Dysoxylum hongkongense, collected in the jianfeng mountain in Hainan Province and Schisandra sphenanthera, collected in the Shanxi Province of China. We isolated 105 compounds from these four plants, including 6 sesquiterpenoids,6 iridoids, 21 triterpenoids,16 diterpenoids,41 lignans,3 steroids,1 flavanone and 10 other types of compounds. Among them, we obtained 22 new compounds, including 7 triterpenoids (compounds 1,2,3,73,74,75,76),6 diterpenoids (compounds 8-13), and 9 lignans (compounds 32-39,45).We evaluated the anti-inflammatory activity of terpenoids and the radical scavenging ability of lignanas. Compouds 1,2,11,13,22 were more active than other compounds in the anti-inflammatory activity with IC50 value 25.5,41.5,27.4,14.5 and 45.2μM, respectively; and compounds 32,37,37 were more active than other compounds in the antioxidant activity with IC50 value 92,35 and 48 μg/mL, respectively. In this manuscript, diterpenoids compounds with anti-inflammatory activity have been reviewed in the period 1989-2014.The dissertation would be a supplement for the research of the anti-inflammatory activity and some lignans evaluated for antioxidant activity from the plants as well as structural-activitiy relationships, and may benefit utilizing and developing the natural plant resources of our country.
