Minority medicines are popular in minority regions because of their good efficacy, safety and low price. Six minority medicines, including the Tibetan, Uygur, Mongolian, Dai, Zhuang and Korean medicines have made good progress under standardization management, which results in large scale and brand effect. Tujia medicine is an important component in minority medicines. It has a long history, locating in the area among Hunan, Hubei, Guizhou province and Chongqing. This ancient and natural medicine contains large quantities of experience for preventing and curing diseases. Medicine and pharmacy combine firmly. The special methods for diagnosis, treatment and medication habits are of great nation, region and tradition. It is one of the rare and vital minority medicines, which has high medicinal research value. Tujia medicine is experiencing a critical moment for development. Firstly, it has been acknowledged to be effective by Tujia people. Secondly, a lot of folk recipes for preventing and curing diseases haven’t been spread widely even if its convenience and efficiency. Thirdly, Tujia people don’t have their own script, so Tujia medicine can only be inherited from mouth to mouth just like Miao medicine and Dong medicine. However, this kind of inheritance is suffering huge resistances under the limitation of law on medical practitioners and regulations for medical institution administration. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to save Tujia medicine as soon as possible.Collecting and cataloguing data for minority medicines can not only carry forward national culture and protect cultural multiplicity, but also inherit the tradition of minority medicines and make its theoretical system perfect. It is benificial to improve clinical therapeutic efficacy and primary service ability of minority medicines. Selecting and popularizing proper techniques in minority medicines can exert advantage of minority medicines, safeguard the unity of the nationalities, and construct the harmonious society. In this study, the origin, theoretical basis, pathogenesis, popular methods for diagnosis and treatment in Tujia medicine have been collected, excavated and systematized. Different research methods have been used, including literature consulting, having interviews with ordinary people, key interviews, convening forums on societies at all levels, and referring to technical platform for national survey of Chinese medicine resources. Compared with Traditional Chinese Medicine and other minority medicines, the difference and characteristics of Tujia medicine have been found. This study will lay the foundation for inheritance and innovation of Tujia medicine, and contribute to national standardized test for it.
