Study On Chinese Rhetoric And Lexical Development

The lexical development cannot exist without the language use, and the language usehas to involve rhetoric. The Chinese lexical development and rhetoric has the closerelationship. The evolution of the meaning, the occurence of the new words and thereplacement of the word and so on take place influenced by the rhetoric techniques. In theperspective of language use, it is of great worthy systematically exploring the rhetoricinfluence on the lexical development.The paper mainly includes:(1)Establish the complete theory system that Chineserhetoric affects the lexical development;(2)Respectively discuss the principle andperformance that all kinds of rhetoric techniques and rhetoric phenomena influence thelexical development;(3)Investigate the diachronic evolution of the special wordsinfluenced by rhetoric techniques, collect, induce and conclude lexical evolution underthe same rhetoric effect;(4)Summarize the rules that rhetoric techniques affect the lexicaldevelopment.The paper has12chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, which introduces theresearch history and current research situation, the research significance, the researchmethods, materials and corpus source. The second chapter is about the overview theory ofthe relationship between Chinese rhetoric techniques and the lexical development,including the " the base of the rhetoric theory","the base of Chinese lexical developmenttheory","the relationship among the language use, the rhetoric innovation and the lexicaldevelopment","the conditions and process of rhetoric phenomenon into lexicalphenomenon ", etc. Then the paper is divided into Active Rhetoric and General Rhetoricthat discusses the relationship of the rhetoric techniques and lexical development. The firstpart is from chapter3to chapter8, which discusses the relationship of the eight activerhetoric techniques and Chinese lexical development, the eight rhetoric techniques areHyperbole, Transferred epithet, Enallage, Parody, Pun, The Rhetorical Device of Duanqu,Synaesthesia and so on. The second part is from Chapter9to Chapter11, whichdiscusses the General Rhetoric Techniques effect on the lexical development, respectivelyin the three aspects of "the words collocation","the use of sentence pattern","Chineserhythm arrangement". The last chapter is the conclusion, including the conclusion of thestudy, the general rules of rhetorical effect on lexical development, the paper’s innovation,the deficiencies and the outlook for the future.The aspects of innovation are as fellows:1. Comprehensively and systematically discuss the relationship of the rhetorictechniques and the Chinese lexical development in the perspective of language use, establishing a relatively complete system that the rhetoric techniques influence the lexicaldevelopment." rhetoric technique" is defined as the view" the use of language", which runs throughthe full text, keeping the consistency of theory and application. For the first time, theeffect of General Rhetoric Techniques on the lexical development is included into thesystem that the rhetorical technique effects the lexical development, so as to construct acomplete system that the rhetorical technique affects the lexical development. ActiveRhetoric Technique as supplement of the previous studies focuses on the rhetorictechniques, such as Hyperbole, Pun, Transferred epithet, Enallage and the RhetoricalDevice of Duanqu and so on.2. Focus on describing and revealing the process in the diachronic perspective.The paper not only classifies all kinds of words influenced by rhetoric techniques, butfocuses on exploring the specific word’s dynamic evolution, the original context in whichthe rhetoric techniques take place on the base of the corpus at the different stages, so as toobjectively present the lexical evolution influenced by rhetoric techniques.3. Proposed the new view on some specific issues.e.g. the paper disagrees on the examples which Pun influence on taken by previousresearch, and points out the possibility of either the extension of the lexical meaning bythe metaphor, or just the symbolic meaning and not the word meaning itself. Based on thiswe analyze the conditions and range that Pun influence the lexical development, withspecific example demonstrate the lexical development really caused by Pun.We analyze the relationship and difference between "The Rhetorical Device ofLianji" and partial compounding words, and point out that not all partial compoundingwords is derived by "The Rhetorical Device of Lianji". Take the word “dongjing” forexample, it doesn’t experience the process of “The Rhetorical Device of Lianji”, and isactually made by generalizing the positive and negative meaning, The partial meaning of"dongjing" comes into being after it has been completed lexicalization later.For the first time, the paper puts the rhetoric effect into the system of the lexicaldevelopment, dividing the Rhythm Rhetoric Technique into Acitive Rhythm RhetoricDevice and General Rhythm Rhetoric Device, and respectively analyzes and discusseshow the rhetoric techniques impact the lexical development.
