Tibetan medicine originated in Tibetan Plateau, is a successful experience accumulated from fighting with a long and harsh natural environment, and a series of diseases caused by climate changes, unfitted food. It has been optimized, diversified in the course of historical development of thousands of years. Historically, Tibetan medical sciences absorbed the soul of medicine through the medical research to surrounding countries, and converted it into their own medical field by combing the reality of Tibetan Plateau. Moreover, Tibetan medicine has established a unique theoretical system, which has distinctive interpretation to human body and the nature.According to the Tibetan medical sciences, breathing is one of the important elements of continuity of life, many Tibetan medical experts from ancient time to now have brought forward the opinion on the connection between breathing and life form. The ancient Tibetan yoga book especially discussed how to achieve longevity with nursing body through breathing. The paper consists of two parts, which are respiratory physiology and pathological respiration. It first covers the discussion on respiratory physiology, which however, has barely been seen in the ancient Tibetan medical masterpieces, so it did not form a complete system. The ancient yaga books are rich in content about yoga breathing, those methods introduced in the book have great effect on nursing body and treating diseases, which could be proved from the ancient yoga practitioners’ biographies. However, the yoga methods have only been practiced by a few yoga practitioners in both ancient and modern times, and it have not been widely applied in the practice to prevent and cure diseases. Currently, to further mine, aggregate and spread health-related content in Tibetan traditional culture has become an important issue to inherit, promote Tibetan medicine. The paper has compared and analyzed the Tibetan medicine with other Tibetan traditional subjects, breathing-related statement in other medical books, and has initially presented a systematic Tibetan medical theory related to breathing. The paper starts from the origin of breathing, the demand for normal breathing, the instrument for breathing, a process of internal and external breathing, the connection between breathing and the five elements, breathing and body, breathing and psychology, the ways to breath, the role of breathing, the seven simple ways to breath and eight patterns of breathing, the influence of breathing on physical maintenance and to carry out a complete analysis through the findings. The second part mainly discusses the findings about pathological respiration. In this part. the causes, the process and the classification of breathing-related diseases, the symptoms of heat and cool are highlighted. On the treatment of respiratory diseases, this part emphasizes the medical treatment, one of the four treatments according to the Tibetan Four Medical Classics and various prescription. In order to know the causes of therapeutic effect of medicine used, not only does the paper theoretically analyzes medicine, herbs that cure breathing-related diseases, but also list some essential medicinal herbs. This part additionally analyzes some special prescription. According to Tibetan medical classics, the symptoms of respiratory diseases usually present breathing difficulties and other twenty forms. For each symptom of respiratory disease, the paper carefully analyses the causes of diseases, which lays foundation for a completed theoretical system of Tibetan medicine. In summary, the study has followed the tradition of Tibetan medicine, and has initially formed the theoretical framework of breathing by absorbing the essence of various medical schools, which not only could be references for researchers, but it also provide convenience for clinical applications. Today, the problem of air pollution is getting worse, people’s physical and mental health are suffering severe challenges. Perhaps the venerable Tibetan medicine can bring good news for us.
