This thesis studies the Xu-Jiang realistic figure painting system mainly from two directions.The first one is to make analysis from its historical background,development process and its representative painters.Horizontally,the Chinese and Western figure paintings of Xu-Jiang system are contrasted.Vertically,the system is compared with the traditional figure painting school.And the final purpose is to interpret the independent value of Xu-Jiang realistic figure painting system.The other direction is to carry out the principle analysis and development exploration within the system in order to discover new problems and limitations,and also to explore new possibilities and innovations.At the same time,this paper will also analyze and compare the excellent works of several generations of painters of the Xu-Jiang system to demonstrate the development and achievements of this system more visually.Comprehensively speaking,Xu-Jiang realistic figure painting is undoubtedly the most profound and most far-reaching reform and development in the field of Chinese figure painting in the 20 th century.Looking back now,this system has not only produced several generations of influential research artists,but also produced a large number of famous works,which greatly promoted the transformation of Chinese figure paintings from traditional to modern style.In addition,Xu-Jiang system plays an important role in our country’s college education system and has strong pioneering and in-depth value.By internal combing and study,it can be found that Xu-Jiang realistic figure painting,though referring to Western realistic modeling system,fundamentally speaking,cannot be confused with the western realistic system.Meanwhile,it maintains a certain distance from the traditional literati painting school,but still has connections from the perspective of cultural roots.The two points can be attributed to the core issue that it draws on the principles of Western modeling but with line modeling as the main manifestation.This is the fundamental difference between Chinese and Western paintings on a certain level.Xue-Jiang System from the perspective of rational cognition consists of four aspects:modeling principle,modeling language,picture composition principle and creative expression.In terms of concrete practice and training,there are modeling training,modeling language analysis and exploration,picture composition analysis and the exploration of creative expression method.The logical relationship between the parts follows the process from cognitive understanding to practical application.Xu-Jiang realistic figure painting from its origin to this day has roughly outlined the basic development sequence of realistic figure paintings through several generations of devoted research and exploration of artistic practice.Upon the comparison of works and the combing of ideas of individual artists,it can be clearly seen that there are great development space and prospect in all aspects of this system.This development is based on the artist’s own knowledge structure,academic accumulation,and the realm of ideas.This is also a clear-cut requirement for innovation lying in front of our generation.All in all,Xu-Jiang realistic figure painting system played a huge role in the development of Chinese figure painting in its early days.It has opened up the relationshipbetween artistic creation and real life,and has brought art much closer to the masses.In every historical stage of its development,there are innovative propositions placed before the times.The research and combing of this system can provide a referential direction and road to its future development and enrichment.
