Printmaking is an age-old method of printing and developing images. Its techniques and approaches have evolved significantly over time, from being a means of reproduction,to becoming an expression of art. This dissertation attempts to show not only the evolution of printmaking in Pakistan, but also the process of visualizing the image, both conceptually and technically. The thesis will argue this point through three examples in the field of contemporary printmaking in Pakistan, using case studies of three contemporary Pakistani printmakers, each of whom explored the diversity of the printmaking art form and medium. The thesis also examines how these three artists have rediscovered traditional skills, and the daring techniques employed by their artistic predecessors. The study will explore these artists’ specific interests, and how they perceived the same phenomenon in different ways, through their differing approaches. The thesis involves a detailed discussion on the similarities and differences of selected artwork from these three printmakers. These artists are strongly committed to their environment and yet seem quite aware of the larger mainstream contemporary art world.Their work is contemporary in idiom, although they employed very different means.Furthermore, these case studies aim to reveal the studio practices of the selected artists. These printmakers use a wide range of techniques, from intaglio to relief, and manual to digital. That’s explore their feelings through their artwork, and convey their ideas. They also highlight numerous subjects in their art work, ranging from socio-political issues, personal experiences, cultural themes, and the current conditions of society.Through the appreciation of their works of art, observations of their exhibitions, interview materials and the study of related published literature, this thesis will attempt to demonstrate where these three artists diverged, and where they found common ground.
