Abstract/Summary:
Coherent kinematic events in laminar and turbulent boundary layers are investigated for length and velocity scale through a series of experimental studies. In turbulent boundary layers, particular attention is paid to large regions of streamwise momentum deficit and excess as well as regions where the velocity gradient tensor has imaginary eigenvalues (regions of swirl). Interrelationships between regions of swirl and regions of velocity deficit and excess are also studied. The behavior and time development of vortex loops in laminar boundary layers is also studied.
