Abstract/Summary:
An Emotional Intelligence Situational Judgment Test (EISJT) was created in Phases 1 to 3 of this research project and field tested in Phase 4. In Phase 4 of the research, 71 current managers were administered three assessments in the following order: Emotional Intelligence Situational Judgment Test (EISJT), Wonderlic Personnel Test (WPT), and the Mayer, Salovey, Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT).; A Pearson correlation was run to analyze the correlation that would exist between participants' WPT and MSCEIT general score results. Consistent with previous research a nonsignificant correlation (r = .19, p > .05) existed between the two scores.; A Pearson correlation was run to analyze the relationship between the participants' scores for each of the four emotional intelligence ability areas on the MSCEIT with the corresponding ability areas on the EISJT. The results indicated no significant correlations (i.e., ability to perceive emotions, r = -.01, p > .05; ability to use emotion to facilitate thought, r = .07, p > .05; ability to understand emotion, r = .17, p > .05; and ability to manage emotion, r = .12, p > .05.; To further explore the internal consistency of the EISJT, a Pearson correlation was run to examine the intercorrelation of participants' scores for the eight situations contained in the EISJT in each of the four ability areas with the participants' MSCEIT score for the corresponding emotional intelligence ability area. Of the 28 situations contained in the EISJT, 4 were found to have significant correlation. The sixth situation in the understand emotions ability area had a correlation with the MSCEIT's understand ability area of r(68) = .34, p < .01. The seventh situation in the understand emotions ability area had a correlation with the MSCEIT's understand ability area of r(68) = .37, p < .01. The second situation in the manage emotions ability area had a correlation with the MSCEIT's manage ability area of r(67) = .31, p < .05. The fifth situation in the manage emotions ability area had a correlation with the MSCEIT's manage ability area of r(66) = .27, p < .05. These four situations can provide the paradigm for future versions of the EISJT.
