From the perspective of international geopolitics, ethnic relations, economic development, social culture and eco-environment,the ethnic areas in western Sichuan have an essential strategic role in the world pattern.According to the National Main Functional Area Plan and the Sichuan Main Functional Area Plan, the vast majority of the ethnic areas in western Sichuan belong to the determined development areas at the national and provincial levels, where the low level of development of productivity, lagging social development, behind in infrastructure growth.Material and spiritual poverty are intertwined, making this area relatively poorer and challenging to develop, and becoming the "hard bone" of rural revitalization, the short board of building a well-off society in all aspects.Ethnic areas in Sichuan Province are among the areas with world-class tourism resources, ethnic customs, original ecological environment, and long history of multi-culture communication.More than 50% of world-class and national tourism resources are located in ethnic areas in Sichuan Province. The region has a unique ethnic culture, natural ecology, and outstanding cultural and natural landscape. It is called the backbone of China’s tourism development by the World Tourism Organization experts, with the conditions to build a world-class destination. How to make full use of the advantages of the resources here, promote rural revitalization, achieve stable, harmonious and sustainable development of ecology, society, culture and economy, and meet the needs of the residents for a better life has become the eternal theme. The dissertation comprehensively discusses the environmental foundation, location, resource endowment and the current situation of ecotourism development in the ethnic areas of western Sichuan.Ecotourism’s inner and dynamic mechanisms promoting rural revitalization are analyzed from the theoretical level. The evaluation index system of ecotourism and rural revitalization is constructed from the macro level;the quality of life model of residents in tourist areas is constructed from the micro level.A case study of three typical villages is also conducted to specifically discuss the basic situation of ethnic villages, the problems and challenges they face, the promotion effect of ecotourism development on rural revitalization, and their common successful experiences. It summarizes the common problems faced by ecotourism development in China and the unique problems in ethnic areas. It conducts a deep analysis of these problems and their causes. Finally, suggestions are made for ecotourism for rural revitalization in ethnic areas of western Sichuan.Firstly,no matter from the perspective of "three rural issues"(agriculture, rural areas, and farmers)and "four living issues"(life, production, livelihood, ecology)or from the perspective of "four basic functions",or effect orientation, ecotourism can promote rural revitalization. At the same time, ethnic areas in western Sichuan have the inherent advantage of promoting rural revitalization through ecotourism development.Secondly, the evaluation system of ecotourism and rural revitalization in ethnic areas of west Sichuan is constructed, which better reflects the characteristics of the times and regional features. In general, ecotourism and rural revitalization and its subsystems in the ethnic regions of western Sichuan are constantly developing, among which the source market system is the primary obstacle factor for developing ecotourism in the whole region. Therefore, ecotourism marketing should become a key task for the high-quality development of regional tourism. In addition, the main obstacle factors vary from state to state, with the support system and access system being the second obstacle factor in Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, the destination system and support system in Ganzi Tibetan autonomous prefecture, and the destination system in Liangshan. Therefore, the focus of the destination should be different. The coupling and coordination between ecotourism and rural revitalization in ethnic areas in western Sichuan have been improving. Some areas have even achieved leapfrog development and stepped into the stage of quality coordination.Thirdly, integrating with China’ s rural revitalization strategy,it defines a set of life domains that affect destination residents’ quality-of-life,relevant to residents of ethnic area tourism villages, then weighs their respective influence. It constructs a theoretical framework for the quality of life of ethnic area residents, analyzing the mechanisms and boundary conditions at work between the factors and components of quality of life. The study finds that place image, social capital, relative gratification, government trust and tourism involvement all have a marked positive effect on the quality of life.Perception of tourism impact mediates the effects of the above factors, and due to the interference of socio-cultural impact on the quality of life, the effect of mediating factors is obscured.Meanwhile, embeddedness moderates the influence of place image, social capital and government trust on the quality of life and the mediating effect of perceived tourism impact.Fourthly, suggestions for ecotourism for rural revitalization in ethnic areas of western Sichuan are proposed. We enhance the driving force of tourism from the level of destination system construction, enhance the pushing force from the level of source market system, enhance the supporting force of tourism from the channel system and support system, strengthen cultural protection, community participation and financial support, and make joint efforts by government, enterprises, residents and tourists to commit to the high-quality development of ecotourism in order to promote rural revitalization and the realization of shared prosperity.
