In the genealogy of modern and postmodern art,video installation art,as an important branch of moving image art and installation art,has always been a topic of spatial construction and extension in its own development.Along with the evolution of technology and the diversification of media,video installation art has undergone a profound transformation,from early photography,film installation,video,video sculpture,video installation art to today’s video installation art that is closely integrated with space,environment and digital technology.The issue of spatial construction is an inescapable key to the study of video installation works,but in the context of art creation,it is often regarded as a creative "instinct" and placed in an "unspeakable" or "unspeakable" research on the construction of art space is mostly confined to the "metaphysical" theoretical scope.The video installation art,on the other hand,combines the temporal and conceptual nature of "image" and the spatial and material nature of "installation" at the same time,making its form of spatial construction both special and unified,and becoming an excellent model for studying the construction of art space.This is also the starting point and focus of this paper.This paper will discuss space from the perspective of art practice,from both virtual and objective levels,focusing on both the virtual space construction of visible images and the objective space generation of touchable installations.The paper attempts to sort out the historical evolution of video installation art from its germination to maturity and finally generalization through three stages: the mechanical era,the electronic era and the digital era.At the same time,the paper asks questions and discusses various spatial construction issues arising from the development of video installation art,and attempts to summarize the types and characteristics of spatial construction of video installation art at different times and levels.The thesis takes "Mutual shaping" and "Echo" as the key and metaphor for constructing the space of video installation art,which leads to the problem that artists need to face when creating video installation art nowadays-How to find a balance between the desire to escape from the virtual space and the need to enter the real space and reality?Specifically,"Mutual shaping" is the key word that this paper extracts from the artist’s case study on the characteristics and forms of spatial construction of video installation art from the perspective of art creation.In video installation art,"image" as a kind of temporal art and "installation" as a kind of spatial art,through the transformation of "ascension" and In the video installation art,"image" as a temporal art and "installation" as a spatial art realize the "space-time transformation" of spatial construction through the interlacing means of "ascending" and "changing";the "game of viewing and displaying power" between the artist,the audience,the art system and the market.How to make the construction of space in video installation a "game of power";and in the creation of video installation,the four dimensions of concept and narrative,technology and media combine with time and movement,and become the six directions of the artist’s construction of space;the seemingly "parallel universe" of private and public space overlaps.The overlapping of private and public spaces in the seemingly "parallel universe" creates the "concealment" of the theater and field characteristics of video installation art and the "emergence" of the "gray space" as a blurred zone;and the last one is the "Down-scaling" of the hybrid digital space created by digital technology through interaction and immersion mode,and the above five parts together build the entire spatial universe of video installation art.As a metaphor,"Echo" maps and predicts the current state and general trend of the spatial construction of video installation art,where the spatial construction of video installation art is a state that needs to be verified through constant "Echo".The spatial artist’s confusion,the viewers who are fascinated by contemporary digital media also raise new questions: how to strike a balance between escaping from the real boundaries of real space and finding comfort in the world of virtual alternatives? There is no doubt that the artist’s creation will build a new platform of imagination and communication between these two questions,and the answer that the audience expects comes precisely from the artist himself.Finally,this essay poetically responds to the problems that artists face in creating video installations today by presenting the poem by Italian poet Cesare Pavese,"If you want to live,stop and live!" as a precious gift to artists.as a precious gift to the artist,and the exploration and watchfulness of space construction is undoubtedly the mission and responsibility of the artist,and it will also be the choice and answer of the audience.
