Since modern times,the political,economic,and cultural transformation of Chinese society has deeply influenced the development process of local art in Quanzhou,which is significantly presented in the important period of the Republic of China.Echoing the trend of national art development,the painting circle of Quanzhou during the period of the Republic of China also presented a diverse phenomenon mingling old and new styles.At the same time,due to its inner connection with the local traditional culture origin,Quanzhou’s painting circle also had its characteristics in local art development.Quanzhou painters in the Republic of China,as the founder of Quanzhou art history in that period,not only promoted the development of local art with their abundant artistic practice but also made significant contributions to the development of local society.Yet currently this topic,with many aspects to be explored,has not attracted enough attention from the academic circles of regional culture and art research.This paper,with interdisciplinary research methods involving historical study,art history,and sociology,explores and investigates comprehensively and systematically into the regional cultural environment for Quanzhou painters,the composition and characteristics of Quanzhou painters as a specific cultural cluster,and the artistic activities of this group in the period of the Republic of China.In addition,taking Huang Zixia as a specific case,this paper conducts an in-depth case study on the multiple social identities and value realization of Quanzhou painters in this period.This paper also makes a thorough discussion and analysis of the diversified cultural mentality of Quanzhou painters and their artistic transition in this period with the individual circumstances,artistic creation tendency,and development process of different painters in different stages of the Republic of China as research clues.The profound historical and cultural civilization of Quanzhou laid a solid foundation for the development of Quanzhou painting in the period of the Republic of China.On the whole,the painting circle of Quanzhou in this period maintained the basic pattern formed mainly by traditional Chinese painters,which is directly related to the local cultural atmosphere and the aesthetic orientation of the general public.The group of painters living and conducting art creations in Quanzhou was mainly composed of native painters,also with a few non-native ones,forming a historical cluster.After analyzing the formation and composition of this group,this paper summarizes the characteristics of this group and reveals its comprehensive thinking and personality image under the influence of specific social conditions and regional environment.The artistic activities of this group in Quanzhou during the period of the Republic of China include initiating and organizing art associations,holding art exhibitions,editing and issuing anti-Japanese art periodicals,and building schools to teach and spread art and culture.These artistic activities ensured to the largest extent the advancement and avant-gardeness of Quanzhou’s local art development,contributed objectively to the development and prosperity of national art in this period,and brought a far-reaching impact on the social development of Quanzhou.Huang Zixia,a Quanzhou painter born at the end of the 19 th century,has rich and versatile experience in social activities and artistic practice.The transformation of his individual destiny,artistic creation,social status,and philosophy of life reflects the interactive relationship between the identity of local cultural elites and the social upheaval during the alternation of times.Since the beginning of the 20 th century,the young generation of Quanzhou painters,with their constant personal development,has shown active initiations and distinctive characteristics in promoting Quanzhou’s local art education,the innovation and development of Chinese painting tradition,the Anti-Japanese War woodcut movement,and the national art and cultural spirit of Chinese painting.Their efforts spurred the evolution and development of Quanzhou’s art and reflected the transformation and development mode of Quanzhou painters’ cultural mentality during the period of the Republic of China.
