The loss of water and soil is the most serious problem in Loess Plateau region of China. The shelter forest system project has been performed in Loess Plateau region from 1978 to improve the ecological environment. With the method of knowledge-based expert system, this paper classifies the Remote Sensing image of 1980s,1990s,2000s and 2007s. From the acquired land-use map, we can abstract the distribution map of the shelter forest land, which aims to monitor the shelter forest in Loess Plateau region. The major study include: to discover the relationship between land-use type and GIS assisted information, spectrum information and so on; to build the knowledge base with the acquainted expert knowledge; to classify the Remote Sensing image of study area and abstract the distribution map of the shelter forest land; to conduct dynamic monitoring of the shelter forest land changes for summing the law and the trend.Through the study, we can find that the method of knowledge-based Remote Sensing image will notably improve the interpretation accuracy. Combined with the GIS information, spectrum information and some index information, the shadow problem caused by the hypsography can be resolved effectively. From the distribution map of shelter forest land, we can find the area of shelter forest in Loess Plateau Region was yearly increasing 1.44 percent per annum. The measures, such as Shelter Forest Project, Convert Arable land To Forestry (Pasture), Reform of Barren Hills, largely improve the ecological environment.
