The teaching of history is usually carried on according to chronology and themes. It includes a lot of time, places, figures, events and other information. Historical maps show the historical information and support historical inquiry learning. Although there are a lot of historical maps in history books, the capacity of books is limited which cannot contain enough information, so it's difficult to meet the needs of the teaching of history. Geographical information system of historical geographic data management, mapping and analysis functions will play an important role in history teaching. This paper tries to introduce GIS into the teaching of Chinese history, organize historical material in the geo-spatial perspective, and provide historical maps for secondary history curriculum in a network environment. This research aims to provide network learning platform of historical map display, spatial analysis of history, data sharing for history teaching.This paper includes the following parts:⑴The Chinese history education map system is designed using several new web technologies such as Web GIS, web services, service-oriented system architecture (SOA).⑵The historical geography database is designed through integrating the historical people, time, place, event and other information in spatial and temporal dimensions.⑶This system implements the publication of historical maps, search, visualization, editing and updating through software development, and provides cartography, spatial analysis and multimedia show for the study of history.The history education map system based on the software functionality of ArcGIS and software development environment of server is designed, the process how the system was implemented is as follow:⑴Sort out the basic data of Chinese historical geography to provide background information of historical maps;⑵Design spatial-temporal data model of history education map system, and then make spatial-temporal database of Chinese historical figures and events according to secondary school history textbook contents;⑶Publish spatial data through web services of ArcGIS Server 9.3;⑷The secondary history education map system website was implemented using several new web technologies such as ArcGIS, Multimedia computer technology, .NET, Mashup and other technologies.The main achievements of this paper includes: Design of the Chinese history education map system in a network environment includes system architecture, system functions, data models, runtime environment, and key technologies. Design of the spatial-temporal data model of historical figures and events supports web services and spatial visualization of relevant historical data. This paper achieves the prototype of secondary history education system.Related data processing and system design shows that:⑴This system design and the data model is feasible in technology, this paper can implement spatial and temporal organization of historical data, publishing, cartography and information sharing.⑵Historical figures and events are represented through historical maps and multimedia computer technology, not only stimulate student interest in learning, but also promote the historical inquiry teaching.⑶The history education map system based on Web GIS, users can quickly acquire historical maps and multimedia resources through Web browser, and this system has low cost, therefore, history education information system of construction and sharing is easily extended for history enthusiasts.This paper consists of six chapters. Chapter I: This chapter presents the research background, topic, chapter arrangement. Chapter II: The evolvement on historical geography information systems, history education systems, and Web GIS at home and abroad is introduced. Chapter III: Research method focuses on the research mentality, key technologies and technical process. Chapter IV: History education system is designed according to the secondary history academic requirement, the design includes a general system framework, database design, system function module design, the software and hardware development environment, and discussion of key technologies. Chapter V: In this chapter, the application and implementation of the history education map system are described in detail. The last chapter consists of the conclusion, some suggestions and future researches.
