River information, which is the important interpretation signs, plays a key role inthe study on remote sensing geological phenomena. Lithologic and structural featurescan be inferred indirectly by analyzing the the density of water system and watermorphological types. There are many types of water system, including dendritic Riverwater system, radial River, fan River, braided river systems, etc.With the development of computer and remote sensing digital image processingtechnology, the rise of automatic identification system is booming and it has be usedin remote sensing, e.g., identifying of building and roads. Based on the diversity ofwater system and the importance in remote sensing geological work, the establish ofriver identification system is necessary. It can provide high-quality water systemnetwork and the identification result. Also it can improve the efficiency of geologicalinterpretation work. Component GIS is a popular technology which is an integrated ofcomponent software technology and object-oriented technology applied in GIS. Thisdevelopment technology is simple due to its independence on programming language,the high efficiency of system integrating, low cost, and strong expansion. Accordingto previous research results, this system is developed based on the ArcGIS Engine10.0and Visual Studio platform, and it has proposed the method for river typeidentification. The main results are as follows:1. The main function module of the system is river extraction and riveridentification. Base on false depressions of DEM and different river morphologicalcharacteristics, the calculation of river converge cumulants and image binaryzationare completed using improved D8algorithm. Then the extraction of river is completedusing the refinement of mathematical morphology. This system provides custom sizeof windows for user to identify radial, ring and parallel state river conveniently. 2. Based on the Geodatabase, water system database is built by data collection,data processing and data entry. The database contains all kinds of schematic diagramof water system, their remote sensing images, the descriptions of water types and thecauses. The database should be updated in order to update and maintain the database.3. River type identification system built based on ArcGIS Engine and VisualStudio2010completes many functions, including, map management, informationmanagement, editing, help functions, and river identification. The system developedby component GIS is stable, bright, attractive interface and compatible.
