The coastal zone is important for ecology and economy. The coastal environment evolution is greatly affected by the advance and retreat of coastlines. Remote Sensing especially the satellite imagery is an available tool to monitor the changes of coastline, because it can cover a large area and observe the same zone repeatedly. This is very useful to monitor the status of coastal zone accurately and study the dynamic changes of coastline. Under this background, the study on the evolution of coastline by using Landsat MSS/TM,Radarsat-1 SAR et al multi-temporal satellite images will provide foundation for Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) around Qingdao and its adjacent coastal zone since 1979. Basing on previous studies, all kinds of coastline extracting arithmetic are contrasted firstly. Edge detection using Wavelet Transforms was selected and mended to extract coastline from satellite images. The arithmetic was achieved in the program. Coastlines were extracted from multi-temporal images. And the dynamic changes of coastline maps were generated with these extracting coastlines and those digitized from relief map and chart. The results were stored in Qingdao Coastal Zone Geo-database. And the evolution of coastline was analysed quantitatively with GIS. The results indicate that the changes of coastline took place around the Jiaozhou Bay, the Tangdao Bay, the Aoshan Bay and river mouth. The natural coasts gradually became artificial ones affected by human activities. Finally the relation of evolution of coastal zone and human activity was discussed through studying tidal flat developments and the Jiaozhou Bay's actual area reduction.
