Biodiversity conservation is an important part of the Convention on Biological Diversity. All countries around the world are conscious of importance of using Information Technology (IT) to protectbiodiversity.Shanghai insect biodiversity information management system (http://www.insects.cn) , a web database published on Internet, can be retrieved via a browser such as IE or Netscape. The system includes three available sub-systems: the pest manage information sub-system, the Shanghai insect species inventories data information sub-system and the insect subject information sub-system.The pest manage information sub-system comprises 254 pest species which often make heavy damage to crops, including 81 species of landscape pests, 27 crop pests, 54 economic crop pests, 44 fruit pests, 18 vegetable pests, 19 storehorse pests, and 10 underground pests. Every pest information data includes :Serial number, Pset name, Byname, Scientific name, Order, Family, Host plants, Biological morphology, Harm symptom, Distributin, Development rule, Manage method and picture of pest and their damaging symptom in order that the user could query the pest information and identify unknown species of pest through Internet network. Meanwhile, it can provide a new approach for the study and teaching of diagnosis and management of the pest disasters. The Shanghai insect species inventories data information sub-system comprises 1671 insect species distributing in Shanghai. The information data about insects include Serial number, Name, Byname, Scientific name, Order, Familia, Host plants, Distributin and References. The insect subject information sub-system comprises about 200 web-sits which are about insect pset knowledge and information and so on. The information about web-sits include Name, Classification, Brief introduction and Interlinkage. This system is constructed by using IT including database technology (Microsoft Access), networking technology (Active Server Pages and Internet Information Services) and biodiversity technology. Practicality and versatility are the basic principle, which should be considered during process of system development. Users can use this system to inquiry and uphold the insect biodiversity data of Shanghai. How to design and use this system is detailed in the present paper. In addition, the problems in the construction of insect biodiversity information system are farther discussed.
