As a conbination of geography science and information technology, it's the focus of GIS research in expeditous storage management of spatial data and attributable data since its very beginning. Alone with the development of Database Management System(DBMS), it's the primary stream to develop spatial database on Objected-relation Database Management System(ORDBMS).Based on a thorough study of the primary aspects relating to massive data storage management, such as underlie DBMS, spatial index, spatial SQL and spatial data model, the paper proposes the idea of storing and managing massive spatial data founded on PostgreSQL.Focusing on this approach, this paper carries out the following research contents:1) A comprehensive research of the architecture of spatial database in which the author elaborately analysis the role of each side relating to spatial database. The author points out that spatial database requires not only underlie DSMS holding support to spatial databut also efficient spatial index and quick spatial SQL.2) Based on a comprehensive research of the development process in DBMS, the author finds there are many advantages in storing and managing massive spatial data founded on PostgreSQL, presents the idea of developing spatial database on PostgreSQL.3) Designs the uniform access interface to underlie DBMS, develops the independent access to underlie DBMS in spatial database.4) Presents the concept system of map library, the author designs and develops system tables required by carrying out massive spatial data storage mangement in PostgreSQL.
