Currently, satellite photogrammetry has been one of the mostly used methods of topographic mapping. Along with the quick development of science technology, such as space, navigation and electronics, the theory of satellite photogrammetry is developing too. This paper researches on SPOT5 HRS stereo mapping. including: 1. Firstly, it introduces satellite's positioning and attitude survey system, especially introduces SPOT5 satellite's positioning and attitude survey system. 2. According to the characteristics of SPOT5 satellite when acquiring image, presents the mathematic model of stereo mapping, introduces the preprocess of data, the establishment and calculation of error equations in detail. 3. Discusses the geometric error of linear CCD satellite when acquiring image. 4. Infers theoretical precision of satellite stereophotogrammetry, then take SPOT5 HRS for example, calculates its theoretical precision and some analysis has been made. Experiments of two areas prove that the mathematical model for SPOT5 HRS stereo mapping is correct, and it can achieve a good precision. The experiments also prove that the formula of satellite stereophotogrammetry is right, and it can be applied to estimate theoretical precision of other satellite stereophotogramm-etry.
