In recent years, gas hydrates, which are considered as a new kind of energy, havebecome a hotspot in the field of exploration geophysics. But unfortunately, theresearch on how to identify is still in its elementary stage. The main identifyingapproaches using artificial seismic method is to look for Bottom SimulatingReflection (BSR) and the amplitude blanking zone with high velocity above BSR inseismic vertical profiles. When the BSR and the amplitude blanking zone are notobvious, we can use the method of seismic attributes to identify the zone of gashydrates.Seismic attributes are characteristic parameters educed from the seismic datathrough mathematical transform, and related to the seismic wave kinematics, dynamics and statistic characters. The propagation of seismic wave in undergroundmedium is a complicated process. It is an integrated response of the characteristics ofthe layers underground. The characteristics of the seismic signal are caused by rockphysics property. When the characteristics of the layers underground changes, theresponse of the seismic wave changes, then the seismic attributes change also.In this paper we first introduced the research history and the status quo of gashydrates;then reviewed the development of the seismic attributes and systematicallydiscussed the theoretical basis of seismic attributes. In order to expediently study theseismic attributes, we compiled some seismic attributes program codes. Thecalculational methods of the seismic attributes are introduced in detail in the paper. Atthe end of the paper we applied the seismic attributes to the real data of line HD616 inthe South China Sea. Based the characteristics of the seismic attributes and otherseismic signal characteristics, we draw a conclusion that the gas hydrates is existthere.
