| The goal and significance of this thesis is, firstly, to introduce Suppes' idea on philosophy of science, which Suppes names 'Probabilistic Empiricism', and the main features of which are pluralism and local character. Secondly, philosophy of science is during interim, and it faces reproach which empiricism meets with, argument of determinism and indeterminism, and controversy of view on causality. The philosophy of science of Suppes just solves the questions in some sense in a kind of idea and way, and exceeds logical empiricism and 'postempiricism' to open up a new way for philosophy of science. Suppes thus says: 'The imperialism of logical positivism has disappeared. The new imperialism of historicism is also now showing signs of fading. We have, I hope, entered a pluralistic era of irenic appreciation of many different ways of looking at science.'From logical empiricism to 'postempiricism', the paper, firstly, dates back the history of the philosophy of science, and opens out the difficulties which philosophy of science faces, to illustrate the historical background of the formation of Suppes' 'Probabilistic Empiricism'.Secondly, through Suppes' views on theory, views on probability, views of probabilistic causality and views on rationality, it introduces and analyses Suppes' main views of 'Probabilistic Empiricism'.Finally, it extracts the main features of Suppes' philosophy of science ,describes the science in the philosophy, and analyses the active role and the limitation of Suppes' philosophy of science .The questions which this paper solves are, logical empiricism how to decline, 'postempiricism' how to make contemporary philosophy of science difficult,and Suppes' 'Probabilistic Empiricism' how to exceed logical empiricism and 'postempiricism' to open up a new way forcontemporary philosophy of science.In my opinion, Suppes' 'Probabilistic Empiricism' reveals a kind of brand-new idea and a distinctive way, and opens up a new way for contemporary philosophy of science .
