Presently, those old oil fields in our country, such as the Daqing Oil Field, are coming into the phase which the oil resource is becoming exhausted. The exploration areas are extended into the city zones and the complex mountainous areas. In this case, the difficulty increased. So, we should introduce new techniques and methods to improve the exploration. The 3D visualization based on the remotely sensed images is a new technique in information realm. This technique is broadly used in many domains, such as the oil exploration. In this paper, we intend to study the application of 3D visualization to the design of exploration. We build the 3D scene based on the GIS and remote sensing in order to aid exploration devisers in the indoor works. By this way, we reduce the blindness of indoor design. In order to realize our targets, we detailed analyze in several aspects: 1) the pretreatment of remotely sensed images, such as the geometric correction of images, the Mosaicing of images; 2) the production of DEM, including the production methods and the data source selection policy for DEM; 3) the establishment of 3D scene; 4) the redesign of exploration lines. The practical application proved that the new methods proposed in this paper could improve the efficiency of design for indoor exploration and decrease the difficulty of field works.
