River network and related watershed information directly derived from DEM, is the basis of development and application of distributed hydrological models.Author has researched the technique of the automated extraction of the information of hydrology from digital elevation models(DEM) in recent years ,and discussed the principles and methods of the automated extraction of the characteristics of topography from DEM.Having reviewed the evolvement of the DEM-based Digital Drainage Area Water System Building, in this paper one method (aiming at the deficiency of the numerous hydrology models and compatible with the hydrology study) of building the digital drainage area water system is presented. Furthermore, one tangible system is built using this method.Digital hydrological model is developed on the platform of digital basin derived from raster-based digital elevation data. The software system is developed which could automatically delineate watershed divides, generate the river network and sub-catchments, and establish the topological river network structure. It can be coupled with the Grid-Xinanjiang model..Finally, a case study was implemented on the Xixian basin.. The software could be easily coupled with hydrological model.
