Ceratophyllum demersum L., belonging to family Ceratophyllaceae, Ceratophyllum L., is a kind of perennial hydrophily plant and widely distributed throughout ponds and rivers in China. Usually it was used as animal feed, as well as folk medicine for the treatments of internal injury and haematemesis. Furthermore, C. demersum has attracted considerable attention of botanists around the world, because of its special position in botanic system. However, there is no any report about the research on chemical constituents of C. demersum in China. We try to systematically do research on chemical constituents of C. demersum and provide evidence to determine the systematical position of family Ceratophyllaceae.Based on the theories and principles of phytochemistry and modern chemical isolation and purification methods, with the combination of conventional and new methods, analysis was given to the chemical constituents of C. demersum. In this paper we introduce the plant C. demersum, and then we investigate the progress study on chemical constituents of this plant. This paper described the volatile chemical constituents of C. demersum. The volatile oil was extracted by steam distillation and analyzed by GC-MS. The results indicated that 78 peaks were detected and 32 components were identified which accounted for over 69.70% of the total volatile oil.By means of the tube pretest, the systematically preliminary test results of chemical composition were gained. Extraction and Isolation dried chipped C. demersum was extracted with 95% EtOH. The extract was filtered, concentrated in vacuo to a suitable volume, suspended in water, and then successively partitioned with CHCl3, EtOAc and n-Butanol, respectively. Then 13 compounds were separated and purified by column chromatography and 11 compounds were identified by the spectrum methods. Compounds 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 were isolated from this plant firstly. The compounds were identified as:1. Palmitic acid2. Stearic acid3. Decosanoic aci4.β-Sitosterol5. 7α-hydroxyl-β-Sitosterol 6. 7α-methoxyl-β-Sitosterol7. Tricin-7- O-β-D-glucoside8. Naringenin-7- O-β- D-glucoside9. Esculetin10. Stigmasterol11. Uvaol...
