Embedded Geographic Information System (EGIS) is a new rising and flourishing domain. It's the combination of the Geographic Information System and the embedded hardware/software technology. EGIS can supply various embedded equipment with a geographic information system platform, which can acquire, access, manage, query, analyze and display the spatial data. EGIS is also a decision support system. It is the offshoot, extension, supplement and development of the original Geographic Information System.With the development of the embedded hardware equipment, the embedded operating system, the navigation/positioning technology and the mobile interconnection technology, EGIS has been widely applied into the economic construction and the modern national defense. Research and implementation of the development method for EGIS is a new domain and hotspot. It has important meaning to develop our embedded geographic information system and form intellectual property of China.This paper firstly analyzes character and the critical technologies of EGIS. Through comparing EGIS with PC-GIS, this paper puts forward the system architecture of EGIS, and chooses the appropriate hardware and software development platform for EGIS. Then this paper researches and realizes main components of EGIS, including: embedded spatial data management, spatial index, spatial visual and spatial analysis. This paper also optimizes EGIS according to its character.The difficulty and innovation of this paper is how to organize and access the huge spatial information under the finite resource of the embedded system. Therefore, this paper uses the layering vector data structure as the data store format and maps the spatial data. In order to improve the speed of spatial data queried and displayed, this paper puts forward an improved Hilbert-R tree spatial index and LOD display technology, effective saving the resource of the embedded system, improving system responding speed. With regard to spatial analysis, this paper uses improved Dijkstra algorithm, decreasing the querying scope and access capacity of optimal route planning, acquiring good result.This paper realizes a standard EGIS using the embedded platform of ARM as the hardware platform and the embedded Linux as the operating system,and gives the detail procedure and method. It's a constructive and effective exploration for the embedded geographic information system, and provides valuable experience and reference for the development of more powerful embedded geographic information system in future.
