This paper studies the calculation of IR radiation and the simulation of IR image for complex terrain backgrounds. Based on the original theory model, combined with the knowledge of Agricultural Meteorology and Remote Sensing, takes full account of a variety of factors, for example: the surface type, structure, properties, solar radiation ,air temperature and so on, especially vegetation cover situation; uses more precise formula to calculate latent heat flux and sensible heat flux; establishes more comprehensive one-dimensional mathematical model of terrain's transient temperature field for every region of the terrain backgrounds. At the same time, the temperature of typical terrain background is field-measured to verify the accuracy and reasonableness of the model, and then analyses the impaction of all factors. A calculating model of IR radiance of the terrain is developed based on IR radiance theory and its spectral emission characteristics.Based on Digital Image Processing Technology and Interactive Computer Graphics, completes the IR image simulation software development. About this software, the infrared image is synthesized by assigning the pixels of each region of the segmented image the same gray level. Next, the set of radiometric values are mapped to 256 gray levels in order to obtain a good contrast. This software provides an economic and effective solution to generate and demonstrate the infrared thermal images.
