The city is a complicated society of population concentration, intensive economic activity and different lifestyles, it is the epitome of the human activity. Such a system that the structure is complicated, the scale is huge, developing dynamic , its development and changes not only in the increase of population, economic development and function changes, but also in the changes of urban spatial structure. Regular or irregular access to the information of the urban dynamic changes, understanding the urban dynamic changes tendency, it may provide the service information for the urban planning departments to enable the city to develop in favorable and sustainable direction.In this paper, takes 2001 IKONOS and 2006 QuickBird remote sensing images as the main data sources, utilizes the technological method that combine remote sensing (RS)with geographical information systems (GIS) , and regard ERDAS IMAGINE, ArcGIS and ArcView as the operating platform, adopts the means that combines qualitative analysis with quantitative analysis, takes Dongsheng District of Ordos city of the Inner Mongolia as an example and carry on the analysis and research of the urban dynamic change. The main conclusions are as follows:(1)The area of the finished district of Dongsheng District is expanded from 1932.80 hectares in 2001 to 3258.88 hectares in 2006, the expanded area is 1326.08 hectares in 6 years, and the pace of the expansion are 221.01 hm2a-1, and the extended index of average annual expansion is 1.96, it belongs to high speed expansion. With the expansion of the area of the finished district of Dongsheng District, the urban centroid has been shifted, centroid longitude shifted from 109°59'34" in 2001 to 109°59'2" in 2006, centroid latitude shifted from 39°48'51" in 2001 to 39°49'0" in 2006. In 2006 centroid position move to the northwest and the floating space is 0.77km, compared to 2001.(2)From 2001 to 2006, the urban land use in Dongsheng District changes greatly in 6 years, the total trend is that the area of residential land,public facilities land,industrial land,storage land,external transport land,road square land,municipal public facilities land,green land is increasing, the area of water and other land is decreasing. The reducing area of water and other land mainly turn to residential land,green land,industrial land,road square land,public facilities land, etc.. Of course, the other types of the land also shift each other, for example the public facilities land turns into residential land, the industrial land turns into residential land, etc..(3)Through analyzing the space shape of Dongsheng District in 2001-2006 in quantitative ways by the use of GIS technology, and the conclusion is that the fractal dimension and the shape index is decreasing, the compacted index is increasing. From that we can conclude that the expanded type of land in Dongsheng District is the fill type, and the use of land in internal urban is compact and saving.(4)The development of economy and the growth of population are primary driving factors of the urban dynamic change of Dongsheng District, to some extent, the natural factor affected the direction of expanding in the Dongsheng district.
