When the high-grade highways have been constructed in the bedrock mountain terrain, it will inevitably need to excavate the original terrain. Resulting in the highway slope instability signs are everywhere. Much of the reason is due to people judge the failure mode of rock slope inaccurate, as well as the calculation of slope stability is not accurate enough. It is also because of the joints' stochastic and hidden in the rock slope. So that it is difficult to grasp the sense of management in design, manage inadequate will remain safety problem, manage excessive will result in waste, and sometime are even use the inappropriate management. By this token, the slope stability evaluation is the base part of slope management engineering, and objective and accurate evaluation of slope stability is the important part of the success or failure of management engineering.Thesis based on the rock slope stability evaluation, through collecting the previous research data. First, summarize of the rock slope stability evaluation methods at the present stage. Including the methods which has been recognized and been used in the actual engineering, such as chart analysis method, limit equilibrium method, numerical simulation and so on. Also including the methods of explore-stage and validate-stage, such as HSMR, reliability analysis, intelligent computing methods (neural networks, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms) and so on. Then classified the highway rock slope, and analyzed the failure modes of each type slopes and which caused by the excavation work. And using the strength reduction FEM to simulate the layered and massive structure slope, and using discrete element to simulate the fragmentized structure slope. Obtaining the every factor (such as slope externality factors, material parameters, etc.) impact degree of slope stability and its failure modes criterion. At last, there are two rock slopes as examples in the highway from Xinxiang to Jiyuan in Henan province. Using the strength reduction FEM to analyze and evaluate the slope stability and predict the failure mode. Summing up the corresponding control measures for slide and collapse destruction.
