The development of geographic information system(GIS) provides prospecting for new methods, in particular, spatial database, spatial analysis, statistical analysis techniques etc. have been widely used in the quantitative assessment of mineral resources. The paper which is supported by the national science & technology pillar program during the eleventh five-year plan period studies the key technology, processes and methods of manganese ore prospecting based on GIS which are used in prediction and assessments of manganese ore in western Guangxi and Southeastern Yunnan region and achieve good results.The paper collects geological data, geophysical data, geochemical data, DEM data, geographic data, manganese ore bed, etc. in Western Guangxi and Southeastern Yunnan region, studies the storage of the geological data, the relationships between the geological variables and manganese ore-forming and extracts manganese ore-controlling geological variables; studies the quantitative assessment of manganese ore based on GIS and the methods of building multi-scope portfolio models which are used in prediction and assessment of manganese resources in study area, and the results have been shown.In this paper, the main results are as follows:(1) To design and establish multi-spatial database of geo-sciences for the quantitative assessment of mineral resources in the study area to achieve effective storage, management, analysis of manganese integrated exploration data;(2)To use GIS technology and statistical analysis to study the relationships between manganese ore beds and manganese sedimentary basins, geological field of fracture, distance field of sedimentary basins, sedimentary facies, lithologic composition, stratigraphy, terrain features, aeromagnetic anomaly in the study area and obtain the integrated assessment conceptual model of manganese ore prospecting and 17 ore-controlling geological factors;(3) Response to the problem of geological information asymmetry, use GIS-based assessment of manganese proprietary algorithm such as multi-scope portfolio models and so on to establish integrated quantitative assessment models of manganese ore prospecting which have the functions of resource locator and quantitative assessment, and the models are used in study area to predict and assess manganese ore, draw manganese ore resource assessment maps and delineate the prospecting targets of manganese ore.
