The ESRI ArcGIS software is widely used in GIS project implementation in China. Today the GIS data is more and more accumulated. During the construction process of GIS projects, many users have the demand on the conversion between the CAD data and GIS data. Since the powerful graphics editing capabilities of AutoCAD, most users are only familiar with the CAD software operations, but little understanding of the GIS software. However, CAD data and GIS data in the data models are very different; both the software described data in different ways. The traditional method of data transformation either can not achieve the conversion of symbols or will cause loss of data attributes, which can not guarantee data integrity and the CAD data and GIS data can not be achieved semantic conversion, the consequence is that various economic sectors can not be shared, which causes a waste of valuable data resources. This paper was finished based on Jiuquan 3D Pipeline Information System, which studied the conversion between pipeline data and basic geographic data in ArcGIS and CAD format. We first discussed the conversion with CAD DXF format, which means the conversion methods need to make deep study on the DXF file format and have a deep understanding on CAD and GIS data model. This paper was elaborated in this section. We explored the spatial data and attribute data conversion between CAD and ArcGIS. We studied the conversion of CAD and ArcGIS symbol. For point symbols, CAD achieves the conversion by defining blocks and point symbol compare table, CAD blocks can be considered as Cad's points. The line type of CAD was defined by line type file, which can be transformed by line symbol compare table. This section also studied how to define complicated line type and the method of conversion. Also we explored how to achieve partial updates with this transformed method. However, the DXF file is more complicated, so we discussed another method that achieved the conversion. We used the open source components DWGdirectX 1.12 to realize the transformation, the method of data classification and converted some complicated graphics to ArcGIS format, the designing of symbols conversion and the text conversion.By studying the data conversion between DXF or DWG format and ArcGIS format. We conclude that: To realize the full conversion of CAD and ArcGIS data, the key is the conversion of symbol. It is important for the conversion of symbol to establish the compare table. Attribute data conversion can be realized by CAD XData. This study is useful for achieving efficient use of GIS data resources, it will help users to transfer GIS data out to the DWG file so that it can be edited in the CAD and this technology will help the development of the conversion between CAD and ArcGIS. Finally, this paper directed the future research.
