This article explores the coating process and process parameters applied in coating phenol formaldehyde/APP, as non-halogen flame retardant, upon expandable polystyrene beads, studies the relation between content of phenol formaldehyde/APP and the performance of EPS materials, including flame-retarding performance, mechanical strength and thermal insulation performance. By carrying out limiting oxygen index, VHF, VVF, compressive strength, linear expansion coefficient and thermal coefficient tests, the results show that, with the same content of phenol formaldehyde, the increase in the content of APP lifts the flame-retarding performance of EPS materials when APP is under 20PHR whereas it deteriorates the flame-retarding performance of EPS materials when APP is over 20PHR, this article also shows that, with the same content of APP, the increase in the content of phenol formaldehyde consistently lifts the flame-retarding performance of EPS materials. Hence, this thesis proves that non-halogenated flame-retarding EPS materials with excellent flame-retarding performance, mechanical strength and thermal insulation performance can be obtained by coating phenol formaldehyde/APP, as non-halogen flame retardant, upon expandable polystyrene beads.
