Compound tray is a high efficient gas-liquid contactor which has recently been developed. The compound tray researched in this paper is composed of a dual-flow tray and a structured packing, the latter is fixed directly under the tray. With a Computer Intelligent Identification system, the interfacial areas(a, m2/m3) of Vapor/Liquid in Compound trays are experimentally investigated in a 300 x 200mm distillation column using air-water systems. The results indicate that a is a strong function of the open hole area and the diameter of hole in dual-flow tray, Vapor/Liquid load, Vapor/Liquid properties such as density.~ surface tension and viscosity. A mathematical model is developed to predict a .The prediction is found to agree with the measured data with an average relative error of 9.1%. Based on mass transfer efficiency models proposed for dual-flow tray and structured packing, mass transfer efficiency models are developed to predict the transfer efficiencies both in packing region and in froth region for compound tray. Eventually, a comprehensive model is proposed to predict overall efficiency for the compound tray. 85% of the predicted efficiencies for compound tray agree with measured values within ? 15%.
