In order to research the application of nonlinear optical materials for optical limiting, four derivatives of alkoxy metal phthaloyanines were synthesized. The structures of the products were characterized by means of IR. 1HNMR spectra and elementary analysis. By mingling these four kinds of compounds with the monomer (MMA) of polymethyl methacrylate, respectively, we prepared metal phthaloyanine / polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) composite materials which have nonlinear optical properties. The nonlinear reverse saturable absorption measurements of composite materials were performed with a frequency-doubled Q switched Nd:YAG laser. Appreciable effect of optical limiting was observed in the experiments. We discussed the main factors that affect the properties of reverse saturable absorption and optical limiting of the materials. The feasibility of the composite materials for optical limiting and their faults were also probed. We have made benefic trials on the research of optical limiting materials with abroad protective wavelength, high optical density and high transmission.
