Using copper alloy mould to make the small-sized and thin wall ductile iron castings is a new technology in the foundry field. Because of the characteristics of good product quality,long mould life,high production efficiency,low product cost and less environment pollution,it has been paid more attention and developed gradually in recent years. However,the technology has also such traits that the foundry technology and the mould design are very difficult,and the technological parameters are also very hard to be controlled. So it is necessary to develop an effective and accurate method of foundry technology and mould design.Summing up the research and production experiences of iron castings produced in copper alloy mould of Shenyang Research Institute of Foundry,and looking for a lot of relevant references and investigating several relevant factories,a set of complete method of foundry technology and mould design for the ductile iron castings produced in copper alloy mould has been developed. A design opinion of the riserless casting for the small-sized and thin wall ductile iron castings produced in copper alloy mould is brought forward,and the calculation formula of the section size of the water-cooling channels are inferred. Based on the above work,the first complete CAD software system,which can be applied to design the foundry technology and the copper alloy mould producing the ductile iron castings,has been developed successfully in China by using C++ language on the second developing platform of CAXA software. Several advanced computer technologies such as Open Database Connectivity,ActiveX control,Dynamic Link Library,Saving and Recovering of Design Information,Offhanded Menu are used during the software development. The integrated packing technology of CAXA and the CAD software that we have developed must be emphasized because of its original creation in China. All of above technologies incarnate the style and peculiarity of the state-of-art CAD software.Selecting the ductile iron casting of gear and inert wheel of Chaochai Group as an example,the software system has been used to design the mould and the foundry technology cards. The design results are compared with the numerical tests of filling,solidification,cycle casting and the production tests. The comparisons proved that the design results using the software developed by author are satisfactory,and the design efficiency and accuracy of foundry technology and mould would be improved greatly.
