Methods in analytical techniques have changed greatly since the development of electronic, computer and laser technology. Advanced analysis apparatus has been employed extensively and become the leading tool in the field of chemical analysis. Therefore, it is important to establish reliable methods for analytical projects. This paper has studied the methods for the determination of Cu, Mg, Zn, Si, Fe, Mn and Ti impurities in a series of engineering aluminum alloys via Inductively Couple Plasma-Atom Emission Spectra (ICP-AES). It has been found that different impurity elements should be treated separately by (1) hydrochloric acid, (2) sodium hydroxide and nitric acid in the further determination. The matrix interference and interference among elements have been studied carefully and the correction has been investigated through matrix matches. It has been proven that the method is rapid, simple and accurate. The relatively standard deviation (RSD%) was found to be less than 1.0. The reliability has further been proven by the recovery rate of samples by 100.0% ±5.0%. The precision of the method has fully met the needs of required acceptance indexes for aluminum alloy analysis in aviation manufacturing. In addition to the establishment of analytical procedures, the author has found a simple and new correction method by using standard sample instead of standard solution. This new method would simplify the process of industrial massive production.
