In order to study oxidation damage of SO2 and mechanism of its toxicological role in mammals, the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in nine organs (liver, lung, kidney, heart, spleen, brain, stomach, small intestine and testicle) from mice were investigated after exposure to SO2 at different concentration. The results indicated that SO2 at higher concentration caused decreases of GSH-Px activities in all organs tested of both sexual mice. It meant that SO2 can lead to oxidation damage to various organs and it is a systemic toxin. Then the author studied the effects of sulfur dioxide inhalation on rats' blood pressure. The results showed that the blood pressure of treated groups decreased significantly ether in contrast to the controls or to the untreated state in a dose-dependent manner. It suggested t that SO2 could make great effects on the cardiovascular system. In addition, alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis (comet assay) was used to evaluate DNA damage in alveolar macrophages of male rat and hippocampus, gusui, xiongxian of mice after exposure to SO2 or it's derivatives. The results suggested that SO2 was a clastogen and genotoxic agent, it could make effects on the function of immune system, neuronal system and hematopoietic.
