Present situation and the historical evolution of the research of clothing and fabrics' thermal insulation properties is summarized. This thesis also analyses thermal insulation materials' present situation and develop tendency, and summarizes present situation and the historical evolution of military uniform for cold weather. According to the environmental characteristics of the southwest plateau of our country and its requirements for garments, nonwoven battings are ascertained to study to reach the aim reducing the mass of military uniform. Then, by analysis of heat transfer mechanism of clothing insulation materials, thermo-bonded polyester battings consisted of fine-denier fibers and hollow fibers are trial-produced.Thermo-bonded polyester battings are low energy consumption and no pollution. The proper use of hollow fibers, fine-denier fibers and thermal bonding fibers can make battings have the characteristics of light mass, warmth retention and lasting compression elasticity. In course of trial-producing thermo-bonded polyester battings, firstly, the mass fraction of hollow polyester fibers is determined by analysing test results to insure the battings' compression elasticity. Then, on the trial of adding common polyester fibers, the mass fraction of common polyester fibers is determined 10%, when the battings' characteristics are better than others. Through the analysis and comparison with major products in the market, the determined battings' structure (the mass fraction of thermal bonding fibers is 14%, hollow fibers 40%, and common fibers 10%, and fine-denier fibers 36%) can be considered reaching the aim reducing the mass of battings, while keep the characteristics of warmth retention and compression elasticity.By the theoretical analysis of battings' thermal resistance and the test of battings' thermal resistance at different compression condition, some advise is given to the theoretical model of battings' thermal resistance. Contact thermal resistance can be approved to occupy great share of overall thermal resistance.
