With increasingly stricter requirements of sanitation, comfort and health, and growing complexity and diversity of working environments, demand for protective material with all kinds of functionality is becoming higher and higher. The functionalities desired include high temperature resistance, fire retardation, gas defense, acid and alkalis proof etc.Asbestos, one kind of mineral fiber, is an important high temperature resistant material. But asbestos is harmful to people's health. More importantly, it is considered to be cancer causing. So it is rarely used for body protection material. Since 1960's, many new high temperature resistant fibers came out. For example, Nomex? developed in 1960's by Dupout Co. and Kevlar? in 1970's, Conex? made by Tiejin Co. in 1980's, and P84 manufactured by Lenzing in 1990's, and so forth.Polysulfonamide (PSA) is a new kind of high temperature resistant fiber, developed and produced by Shanghai Synthetic Fiber Research Institute, in cooperation with Shanghai Textile Research Institute. The LOI (limiting oxygen index) of PSA is 33, which indicates that PSA has good fire retardant performance. Facts also prove the possibility of PSA as a high temperature resistant textile material.This thesis is based on the application of PSA in the textile field, with its usage as high temperature protection material. The present workThe thermal stability of PSA, one essential performance, is studied and analyzed by using modern analytical methods. At the same time, the behavior of melting and thermal decomposition in the heating up process of PSA is determined. All these provide the basis for studying the fire retardant and thermal insulation performances of PSA fabric.1. For the purpose of researching combustion performance and thermal insulation, several pure PSA fabrics are designed and weaved.2. By using the vertical burning method, combustion performance of PSA fabric is studied. Meantime, apparent characters after being burnt are analyzed.3. In order to protect human body from being burnt, PSA is utilized in high temperature environments. Burning penetration test of fabric is mentioned in this paper. This test method is designed and used to test pure PSA fabric. The burning penetration performance of PSA fabric is also discussed.4. Thermal insulation of PSA fabric, in meeting the requirements for human body protection, is discussed. A new method of thermal insulation test is developed. Theoretical analysis and experiments prove that the test method is reasonable. Thereafter, parameters of thermal insulation of PSA fabric are tested through this method.5. Quantitative characteristics of thermal insulation of nine different stitch structural, pure PSA fabrics are described. The relationship between thermal insulation and parameters of fabric is discussed. The thermal stability of PSA fiber, combustion performance and thermal insulation are studied.The results of the research will be useful to related industries. This research also provides theories to develop PSA high temperature protection textile.
