The ABR (Anaerobic Baffled Reactor) comprises a series of vertical baffles to force the wastewater to flow under and over them, and ABR may be classified as a series of compartment. It is simple in design and improved biomass retention within reactor. This reactor system has been reported to have many advantages over other reactor system. therefore ABR is one of the many types of high-rate anaerobic reactor presently attracting growing interests. In recent years, there have plenty research about the common peculiarity of ABR, but the research about peculiarity of ABR in the high concentration organic wastewater treatment is few.The research studied the peculiarity and application of the ABR, in which the wastewater come from the process of the erythrocin making, which will make the results more applicable and more valuable. The paper studied the start-up of ABR, degrading process of pollutants, the peculiarity of the ABR under shock loading and the biological characteristics of each unit. Moreover, the paper gives some corresponding propositions about the controlling of ABR.Results of the study showed:(1) It is feasible to start up the ABR with the sludge which comes from aerobic biological system. In the experiment, the start-up phase pass through four periods initial stage, breeding stage, improving loading stage and stable stage. In the initial stage ,the up-flowing rate should maintain within 0.15~0.25m/h. In the start-up phase, it could be improved to 0.20~0.25m/h, but the effluent SS should be less than 250~300mg/L. It is the inoculable sludge, the peculiarity of wastewater and the framework configuration of the ABR that cause the predominant growth of acidogenic bacteria.(2) The complex containment was gradually removed by sort in the ABR, which showed the ABR has typical characteristics of the plug flow system. Along with the raising of the OLR, The gas yield and rate increase at the same time. The distribution of the gas yield and rate in the ABR is normal school along the way.(3)For the erythrocin making wasterwater, when the OLR is 5~6kgCOD/m3.d ,The HRT is 24~50h ,the COD removal rate of is 56-66% in ABR. the up-flow-rate should be less than 0. 5 m/h.(4) Within a certain range of concentration (6000~8530mg/L), the ABR was fairly stable to shock organic load, the microbes were inhibited seriously when the influent COD concentration reached 11320mg/L. The processe of inhibition and rehabilitation includes shocking period, inhibiting period and rehabilitating period.And, (5) In the ABR, OLR gradually descends along the way, so the quality of influent wastewater of each unit is different, for which different microbial communities are formed.
