To find the economical and effectual municipal wastewater treatment techniques, the advantage and disdavantage of anaerobic biological treatment techniques were analyzed. In consideration of the anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) possessing the features of simple structure, high discharge water quality, large shock resistance capacity and being able to actualize the SMPA idea, a laboratory scale ABR with aerobic post-teatment was used to evalvate the feasibility of treatment of municipal wastewater at ambient temperature through the tests of reactor start-up, reactor reactivation, and COD removal efficiency affected by temperature, HRT and alkalinity. Some conclusions are drawn below.:(1) The start-up period of ABR was shot. After 41 days operation, at 24.8℃, hydraulic retention time (HRT) 18.6 h and inlet CODav 465.4mg/L, the effluent COD of the 3rd compartment (C3) of a 3 compartments ABR was 97.7mg/L, and it kept a steady value about 56.1 mg/L after 53 days.(2) At 16.7℃-24.8℃, HRT of single compartment 6.2h~4.2h, both 3 compartments and 2 compartment ABR could be reactived in shot time, temperature and HRT had no visible influence on reactivation.(3) At 16.7℃-24.8℃, HRT of single compartment 6.35h-4.2h, effluent COD of C2 was 100 mg/L-110 mg/L, change of HRT had little influence on effluent COD of C2, but the diameters of anaerobic granular sludge had the trend of extended going with shorter HRT.HRT of single compartment in the aerobic area between 3.25h and 6.3h had no visible influence on COD removal efficiency, but raising HRT of aerobic area with 2 compartments increase the nitration efficiency of ammonia nitrogen, and nitration of ammonia nitrogen maily took placed in C4.(4) Raising temperature, activity of anaerobic sludge was intensified; HRT of single compartment at about 6.2h, lowering temperature from 24.8℃ to 16.7℃, the COD removal efficiency of 3 compartments ABR only fell 2.6%, from 85.8% to 83.2%, it meant that influence of temperatuer to the activity of anaerobic sludge was...
