As a new-type cutter, tungsten-carbide rotary burrs is widely used in mould machining and other bench work. It becomes a difficult problem to machine this kind of cutter due to its more cutter teeth, complex contours and more breeds. In order to solve the problem, a NC system based on IPC, which is used to control grinding machine of the 4-axis rotary burrs, is developed. According to the grinding motion models of the rotary burrs, the grinding of tungsten-carbide rotary burrs is realized through the combination of hardwares and softwares to control the multi-axis simultaneous motion.By comparing the structure of two kinds of the 4-axis NC rotary grinding machine, the possibility of 4-axis NC grinding is analyzed and the fifteen types of grinding motion models are built up. According to function requirements and the development of open NC system, these hardware components such as IPC, motion controller, drive and stepper motor are selected and connected. At the meantime, the programming of the system is completed according to the demand of software design. After the process of grinding is finished, the NC system is used to realize the multi-axis simultaneous motion control of the grinding machine. A lot of trials of all kinds of the rotary burrs are carried on. As a result, the validity and feasibility of motion models are proved. The open NC grinding machine of rotary burrs based on IPC , which is developed firstly by the school of mechanic engineering Tianjin University, has been put into practice successfully.
