Mining depth of the coal mines is increasing unceasingly because of the growth of coal's demand from society and the technological progress, so the problems facing to the deep mining are standing out increasingly. Researching and studying the causes which originate these problems are the premise to solve these problems, and the characteristics of surrounding rock and support design procedures in working faces of strong roof and high ground pressure of deep mines are aspects of study to these problems. The preliminary study to the characteristics of surrounding rock and support design procedures in working faces of strong roof and high ground pressure of deep mines are conducted in this paper using several important methods such as numerical simulation, theory analysis and measuring data analysis from locales. The characteristics of surrounding rock in working faces of strong roof and high ground pressure of deep mines in different mining depths such as change characteristics of coal seam and roof and floor, fracture zone of coal wall, deformation of coal wall and bearing pressure are analyzed by methods of numerical simulation and theory analysis. The quantity of roof sagging and the roof-to-floor convergence under different support intensity in the deep mines of strong roof are simulated based on the theory analysis, and the relations between supports and surrounding rocks in the deep mines of high ground pressure and strong roof are drawn . Bearing stress conditions of the strong roof are analyzed theoretically and the reasonable support pattern in the working face of deep mines and strong roof is driven from the numerical simulation of different support patterns. The cutting-off supporting intensity under strong roof is analyzed theoretically. The roof caving parameters of several roof caving patterns in different loading phases of strong roof are analyzed and compared, and the reasonable roof caving pattern and the method of parameter calculating of deep mine and strong roof are driven. The control and design method of working face in deep and strong roof mine is studied and submitted comprehensively, and is verified by the project example.
