Panel die is an important equipment in automotive body manufacturing. The design and manufacturing time and quality of the dies have direct effects on the development cycle of new cars, and their quality. To enhance competitive capability of our automotive industry, we should make full use of advanced technology of design and manufacture, especially the technology of CAD/CAE/CAM. To research and develop a system applied to die design of automobile panel is a large and complex project. However to complete the development based on a commercial CAD software is a easier way, which can reduce the investment, and can take effect quickly. In this thesis the CAD of flanging dies for automobile panels based on UG software is developed to improve efficiency and quality of parametric die design.In this article the structure characteristics of work-parts for flange dies are analyzed. The principles for designing and splitting punches and dies are summarized. The typical structures for flanging dies are achieved.The procedure of rib design is studied, and a parametric model of rib is established, based on which a software for automatic arrangement of ribs has been developed.To realize automatic dividing flange contours of panels, the author analyzes the characteristics of split dies, summarize the splitting criteria, and put forward the algorithms of dividing points and their adjustments. Both automatic and interactive functions are provided to determine the dividing points. When the user finishes the division, the system can create the die blocks automatically.A CAD system for vertical flanging dies structure design has been developed on the basis of theoretical study.
