How to design the structure of a progressive die effectively has become one of the main problems to be solved in the CAD system for progressive dies. At present, most of existing 2-D CAD systems do not provide with the function of real-time modification, and are still time-consuming to design a progressive die. This thesis tries to overcome these problems by applying the redesign methodology. To support the redesign requirements for progressive dies, the functions, which can be used to modify the die structure, the positions of punch & die, and the geometric shapes of the related parts should be provided. By analyzing the characteristics of the structure of progressive dies, a constrains-based assembly tree model is put forward to represent the structure of progressive dies, and the function requirements and the architecture of the CAD system for progressive dies, which supports redesign, are discussed. By analyzing the implementation mechanism of the redesign function, the related key technologies including variable assembly design, parametric design and associated design are studied thoroughly. With the application of these technologies, the system can update quickly, which means the modification of part of the design can result in the relevant modifications of the rest parts.Based on the research mentioned above, the CAD system for progressive die structure which supports redesign is developed. With this system, designers can expediently design the structure of a progressive die and complete all the modifications during the procedure of the design, and the efficiency of designing a progressive die structure is largely improved.
